Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
